What are dermal fillers?
As we age, volume loss in areas of our body and skin contributes to many of the visible signs of aging. A dermal filler is a synthetic or natural substance that is injected into areas where there has been significant tissue damage from trauma, injury, sun exposure, or repetitive movements such as chewing, smiling, frowning, etc.
Fillers restore volume to the area they're placed in, smoothing out fine lines and creases. They do not add bulk; rather, they replace what was once present with new collagen. This helps prevent future wrinkling and scarring.
If you're thinking of getting injectables for the first time, chances are you have a few questions. In this email, we will get your questions answered together with the results you can expect.
So, what are the advantages of dermal fillers?
Pro 1: Natural results, unlike surgical facelifts.
There is virtually no risk involved when using dermal fillers. By smoothing out the lines and wrinkles and filling out the lips and cheeks, dermal fillers can help you look naturally more youthful and attractive by your own definition of beauty.
Pro 2: Suitable for any part of the body.
Injectable fillers can be used on any part of the body that's been neglected by aging or sun damage. They also work well in areas where there isn’t much fat like under the eyes or along the jawline. And because they're injected directly into the skin rather than being applied as a cream or gel, it takes less time to get results compared to other treatments such as laser resurfacing.
Pro 3: Dermal fillers can help restore healthy collagen.
Our body's natural reserves of hyaluronic acid (and its ability to replenish it) diminishes over time. Dermal fillers can stimulate further growth of additional healthy collagen, giving our skin a more youthful and healthy look.
Pro 4: No downtime.
There is almost always minimal downtime associated with dermal fillers. This means you will return to work immediately after your procedure. You won't need any special accommodations during recovery either. In fact, many people report feeling so good right away that they don't even realize how tired they were prior to having the procedure done!
Pro 5: Injectables can make your skincare routine more effective.
Injectable treatments work best when used alongside your skincare routine because they're designed to help improve the appearance of fine wrinkles or folds on the face. They also make it easier to get rid of acne scars by smoothing them over and making them less noticeable. If you already use a moisturiser every morning before applying makeup, then this step will take some extra effort, but it'll pay off in the long term.
Pro 6: Dermal fillers are not permanent.
That dermal fillers don't last forever (12-24 months) is both a pro and a con. If you dislike your results or later wish to look different, dermal fillers' effects can be reversed with another simple injection. Their impermanence also means you can adjust your results to perfection.
Pro 7: Give you more self-confidence.
While dermal fillers are a physical procedure, many patients choose to have them because their external appearance better matches how they feel inside; they feel more confident, more empowered, and happier in their skin.

And are there any disadvantages of dermal fillers?
Con 1: It can sometimes take a few tries to get your look just right.
The biggest downside with any cosmetic treatment is that you can't always get your look exactly right on day one or even week two. You have to be patient because sometimes it takes several treatments before you see real improvement.
Con 2: There is usually a little bruising.
Swelling, bruising, and bleeding are side effects of fillers. Patients may experience minimal aesthetic changes due to swelling, bruising and/or inflammation at the injection site which generally resolve over the next few weeks.
Con 3: Dermal fillers are not permanent.
The results of dermal filling may begin to fade after 6 to 18 months. Fortunately, however, many patients who have undergone facial filler injections can enjoy their results for more than a year. The average lifespan of dermal fillers is between 12-24 months. This means that you'll be able to enjoy your new look and fresh complexion for an extended period of time but that you won't have to commit to ongoing treatments in order to maintain your beauty!
